Want to help your student athlete navigate the world of sports, school and the pressures that come with being a kid? Or maybe you need help navigating them as a parent? My book, “The Empowered Athlete,” is out NOW and it can help both you AND your athlete navigate this stage of life and help them build mental toughness on the field and off.
Some common questions:
Is my athlete too young to read this? Reading/comprehension wise, ages 12 and up should be fine. For kids who are younger, read it together! This could be for parents to read together with athletes, or parents on their own. It will help parents both for themselves, and your athletes. As a parent, you’ll be able to better understand their
Why is now a great time to gift this to athletes?
Burnout, lack of motivation, lack of confidence, too many things going on at once, struggling to get it all done…worrying about school projects, sports teams, college applications, AND the holidays?
I feel stressed just thinking about it myself. Don’t you?
The holidays, although magical, can be a really tough time for student-athletes. Lot's of finals, presentations, and projects due before going on break.
For a lot of sports this is the halfway through the season mark and if athletes didn't take a break in the summer, this is the time that starts to take a toll on their mind and body. Yep, mid-season burnout is starting to rear its ugly head.
I want to share with you a quick athlete story from my book, “The Empowered Athlete,” on burnout:
“I work with so many athletes these days who teeter on the edge of burnout every single season they play. That is not normal. One of my athletes was practicing with two teams, had one-to-two private lessons every single day,and was playing a high school sport with practice every night, sometimes up till midnight. After that, she then had to go home and do homework, which she was constantly falling behind in because of her insane schedule.
By the end of the school year (right when playoffs for both sports were approaching), she literally looked like a zombie…she wasn’t sure how she was going to make it through playoffs in her other sport…I asked her when the last time she took a break was. “Never. I have never taken a break unless I was sick or injured.””
Burnout is right in front of us. As parents, as athletes, unless we do the work to AVOID burnout, and fill our toolbox with the tools that show us how, then burnout is inevitable. Plus, the more we pile on without taking things away, the more likely athletes are to reach that point quicker.
One of the goals of my book is to help athletes, and their parents, to build a toolbox and be self-aware enough to know when the tools need to be put in place BEFORE burnout happens.
And I want you to know that change and growth is not only possible, it’s probable. If you use the stories, explanations, exercises, and tools that I lay out for you in this book, you will experience that change and growth, and you will set the stage for a lifetime of happiness and success.
