What Questions Do You Have as a Beginning Hockey Parent?
Oct 19, 2025Recently, my husband and I found ourselves in a new and unfamiliar role—standing on the sidelines of a recreational soccer game, watching our kids play, while wrestling shin guards and Googling 4v4 rules between sips of coffee.
As lifelong athletes ourselves, we’re no strangers to youth sports. But starting something new? It’s humbling. We found ourselves asking all the classic newbie questions:
- What size shin guards do we buy?
- Why is it so hard to get the socks over them?! (Seriously though!)
- What are the rules of the game?
- What happens when this season ends?
We kept joking, “If only there were a podcast for this stage…”
And then it hit us: That’s exactly the kind of thing we have been planning to create—just not for soccer.
The Beginning Is the Hardest Part
Starting a new sport as a parent can be surprisingly overwhelming. Whether it's navigating gear, figuring out how to help your child get dressed without tears (theirs or yours…), understanding practice flow, or decoding what to expect at games—there’s a lot that goes unsaid.
We’re used to figuring things out. But still, as we continue to overhear parents struggling to figure things out in the locker rooms while getting our own kids dressed for “learn to play,” we kept thinking: Why isn’t there a clearer guide?
That thought planted the seed for something we’re now deeply passionate about: a podcast and video series designed specifically for new hockey families.
Not just the logistics. Not just the “what to pack in your hockey bag.”
But also the mindset, the emotions, the learning curve—all the things that make this journey so rewarding, and sometimes, so overwhelming.
We Want to Hear From You
To make this the resource you would’ve wanted when your child first started hockey, we’re asking for your insight.
- What confused you the most in the beginning?
- What do you wish someone had told you?
- Was it the gear? The schedule? The rules? The culture?
Whether you’re deep into the hockey world now or just getting started, your voice matters—and could make the path smoother for the next family stepping into the rink for the first time.

This Isn’t Just a Podcast—It’s a Community
We’re not creating this just to hand out advice. We’re building a community. A space where it’s okay not to know everything, where no question is too small, and where new families feel welcomed into the sport we love.
So if you’re the parent who once Googled “how to tape a stick” at 5 a.m.
If you’ve wrestled with hockey bags bigger than your kid…
If you ever felt like the only one who didn’t get “the memo”…
This is for you. And it’s being built with your story in mind.
