Why Mental Training Is Just as Important as Physical Training

Aug 11, 2025

When we think about training young athletes, we usually picture the physical stuff: conditioning, drills, skill work, strength. And while all of that matters—it’s not the full picture.

Because no matter how physically prepared an athlete is, if they don’t know how to manage their mindset, it can all fall apart the second something goes “wrong.”

That’s why it’s important to understand that confidence isn’t necessarily something you’re born with..

But it IS something you can build.

And unfortunately most athletes have never been taught how.

Why So Many Athletes Struggle Under Pressure

I see it all the time—athletes who crush it in practice but second-guess every move during games. Kids who light up when they win… but spiral after a single mistake.

Not because they aren’t capable.
Not because they’re being dramatic.
But because no one’s ever given them the tools to handle the mental side of the game.

They’re told to “be confident,” “shake it off,” or “stay focused”—but not how to actually do that when their mind is racing, or their self-talk has turned brutal, or their nerves are off the charts.

And that’s where the real gap is.

I’m On A Mission

As part of my mission to help 1 million athletes (yes, 1 million!), I created Winning Resilience—a free private podcast built to fill a major gap in most training programs: the mental side of the game.

The podcast includes five short, easy-to-digest episodes you can listen to anytime—on the way to practice, between games, or whenever it fits your schedule. Inside, I walk you through three of the most impactful tools I teach in my coaching programs:

✅ How to stay calm under pressure
✅ How to break free from negative self-talk
✅ How to bounce back fast after mistakes

These tools are simple, powerful, and immediately effective. Athletes who use them begin to shift quickly—showing up with more confidence, recovering faster after setbacks, and staying mentally focused even when challenges arise.

Parents gain insight too. You’ll better understand what your athlete is experiencing, what’s really going on under the surface, and how to support them with greater clarity and calm.

Because Mental Strength Isn’t Just for the Pros

If you’ve ever watched your athlete struggle with pressure, doubt, or discouragement—you’re not alone. And they don’t have to figure it out on their own either.

Mental strength can be learned. Confidence can be built.
And when it is… Everything changes.

Ready to help your athlete build a stronger mindset?
