Athlete finding confidence and performance on the field.

From Anxiety to Confidence: The Power of Mindset Coaching

Feb 11, 2025

This week, I found myself reflecting on two incredible stories that truly highlight the transformative power of mental skills coaching—not just for athletes’ performance but for their lives.

Athletes face challenges far beyond the physical demands of their sport. Whether it’s grappling with anxiety, building self-confidence, or navigating the pressure of big milestones, their mental game often determines how they show up on and off the playing field.

Here are two journeys that exemplify this perfectly.

🌟 A Scholarship Dream:
One family recently shared that their daughter, a high school lacrosse player, just committed to a DI program with a scholarship. This is a massive milestone—but it’s even more remarkable when you know where she started.

When we began working together, she doubted whether she belonged, held herself back on the field, and worried about making mistakes. Together, we focused on building her confidence, managing stress, and quieting the noise from challenging team dynamics.

Her transformation didn’t stop there. She also made the U20 Worlds team and traveled to Hong Kong this past summer to compete on an international stage. Watching her stand tall, embrace challenges, and excel both on and off the field was nothing short of incredible.

💡 Confidence on the Ice:
Another family shared a breakthrough story from their 10-year-old hockey player.

This young athlete used to be consumed by anxiety before games, often feeling physically sick and doubting whether he belonged on his team. In practice, he would hold himself back—afraid of upsetting others and constantly second-guessing his abilities.

But with the right tools and consistent support, he recently played his first tournament anxiety-free. For the first time, he didn’t feel sick before a game, and he believed he belonged on the ice. His confidence showed in how he played—and, most importantly, how he felt.

The Common Thread

These stories are very different, but they share a common theme: the power of mindset.

Scholarships and milestones like a DI commitment are awe-inspiring, but it’s the deeper transformation—the courage to believe in yourself, to let go of fear, and to own your worth—that truly changes lives.

Mental skills coaching isn’t just about helping athletes win more games or reach the next level. It’s about helping them see their own potential, trust their abilities, and thrive in the face of challenges—on and off the field.

If your athlete is struggling with confidence, anxiety, or self-doubt, know that these kinds of transformations are possible for every athlete. With the right tools and support, they can learn to overcome obstacles, find joy in their sport, and grow into the confident, resilient individuals they’re meant to be.
