If Mindset Is 90% of the Game… Why Aren’t We Training It?

Jul 07, 2025

We’ve all heard the phrase:
“Sports are 90% mental.”
Coaches say it. Parents say it.
Athletes nod in agreement—especially after a tough game when emotions are high and confidence is low.

But here’s the real question:

If mindset is 90% of the game…
Why are we spending 90% of our time only training the physical?

Everywhere I turn, I hear people talking about mindset:

“It’s all in your head.”
“She just needs more confidence.”
“He gets too caught up in his mistakes.”

We’ve gotten good at naming the problem.
But most people stop there.

They don’t know what comes next.
They don’t know how to actually train the mental side of the game.
Oftentimes, they don’t even know what that means.

And that’s not their fault.

Mindset training isn’t something most coaches were taught.
It’s not part of traditional team practices.
It’s not a required class in school.

For most athletes, mindset is something they’re expected to figure out on their own—while juggling performance pressure, academics, social stress, constant competition, and sadly, the still ever-present stigma that “something must be wrong with them” if they need help.

That’s exactly why I do the work I do.

Because every athlete has a mindset.
But not all mindsets are built to handle pressure, mistakes, and setbacks.

Some are strong and steady.
Others… just haven’t had the chance to be trained yet.

A strong mindset isn’t something you either have or don’t.
It’s something you build—with intention, guidance, and reps.

And when athletes do learn how to train their mindset?

✅ They stay grounded under pressure
✅ They bounce back faster from mistakes
✅ They lead themselves with confidence—even when things go wrong
✅ And they start to enjoy their sport again, because they’ve built the resilience to handle it

So if your athlete is training hard, but still spiraling after setbacks…
If they’re driven, but doubting themselves every step of the way…
If the mental part feels like the one thing holding them back—

👉 That’s not something to ignore.
It’s something to train.

And I can help.

Let’s stop talking about mindset like it’s something we can’t control.
Let’s start training it like the game-changing skill it truly is.
