What Should Your Athlete Be Doing This Summer? A Smarter Off-Season Strategy

athlete mindset burnout prevention confidence for athletes mental performance off-season training parenting athletes summer programs youth sports Apr 25, 2025

It’s the question I’ve been hearing most from parents lately.

The season is over. Nationals are done.
Tryouts may have already started—or they’re still weeks away.

And you might be wondering:

  • “Should they be resting?”

  • “Training harder?”

  • “Catching up on school?”

  • “Attending every summer camp possible?”

  • “Or just… breathing for a minute?”

Here’s the thing:
There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
And the “rest vs. train” conversation? It’s not that simple.

What Athletes Actually Need During the Off-Season

Most athletes don’t need more pressure.
What they really need is:

🟡 Rest and recovery (on purpose)

🟡 Space to reflect

🟡 Room to be bored and rediscover joy

🟡 Tools to stay mentally sharp—even when they’re not competing

Because without a thoughtful off-season plan, two things tend to happen:

1. They get sick, injured, and/or burn out.

2. They fall into comparison spirals and negative self-talk.

And that can happen whether they do too much… or nothing at all.

The Part They Don’t See on Social Media

Let’s be honest—comparison is brutal in youth sports.

Your athlete might see a teammate or opponent posting workouts and think:

“Why am I not doing enough?”
“Am I falling behind?”

But here’s what they don’t see:
That teammate might be working with a coach (maybe even me!)
And their break is strategically scheduled to start in three weeks to align with family travel, camps, or other personal needs.

But of course… social media doesn’t show the strategy.
It shows the hustle.
And the doubt creeps in.

So they push harder.
Or they freeze.
Either way—confidence takes a hit.

The Mindset Work That Often Gets Left Behind

Even athletes who train their bodies all summer long can hit a wall when the season starts back up.

Why?
Because they forgot to train their mind.

And when things don’t click immediately, the spiral begins:

“Why did I even bother?”
“I should be better than this.”
“I’m still not good enough.”

This Is Why I Created Summer: The Off-Season Advantage

Summer: The Off-Season Advantage is a mindset program built specifically for this time of year.

It’s not about doing more.
It’s about doing what matters.

✅ Structured enough to stay consistent

✅ Flexible enough to work with real life—travel, tournaments, downtime

✅ Grounded in mindset tools that help athletes return confident, clear, and focused

This isn’t a “grind” program.
It’s a strategic reset.
